[RESTAURANT REVIEW] Have known Cassis for many years now and just realized that they have re-branded themselves into a European Casual Dining by adding the name 'Kitchen' after Cassis. In other words, a more affordable 'Fine Dining' although they want to change their concept into a Casual Dining. Cassis Kitchen is promoting their new concept lately after changing their name last year March 2015. I still found it to be a Fine Dining restaurant with all those beautiful expensive interior look; the glass lights, the marble wall, the wine glasses on the table and many more.
I had the chance to try some of their signature dishes on Friday, 20 May 2016 during a small group of private food tasting event with bloggers. I tried some of their perfectly plated appetizers, main courses and desserts, plus free flow White and Red Wine. What a nice treat for me and my wife!
COMPLIMENTARY
Let's start off with this. This is a very refreshing complimentary starter, probably a cranberry flavored sorbet. Perfect sweet and sour flavor, very great to enhance your dining mood :D
COMPLIMENTARY
BABICH SAUVIGNON BLANC MARLBOROUGH 2015
Even before we started our very first complimentary food, we had had this White Wine. Sweet, light, and refreshing. Very great paired with our appetizers.
COBB SALAD - IDR 95.000
This is a very large portion of mix salad: Baby Gem, Tomato, Emmenthaler, Bacon, Red Onion, Cheddar Cheese, Egg, Avocado, Zesty Tomato Dressing. Don't worry, not all the terms above are familiar to us as well :p But one thing that stood out from this salad is the square cut cheddar cheese and it was a lot! Overall, it was a very fresh salad. Great for 3-4 persons.
SPICY TUNA TACOS - IDR 75.000
It was a one bite small corn tortilla filled with spicy tuna tartare and pickled red onion. Very tasty and very bold in flavor, my favorite among all appetizers that I tried.
PAN SEARED SCALLOPS - IDR 150.000
Not sure about the pricing, but what I found from the internet is the 'Alaskan Scallops' one. Beach mushrooms, edamame, sauteed shallot, and citrus brown butter. Very smooth and perfect chewiness with a little perfect seasonings. My second favorite after Spicy Tuna Tacos. This is certainly not my normal casual appetizer considering the price, but as a fan of Hells Kitchen USA, this is not a new thing for me.
CARAMELIZED DUCK - IDR 225.000
You know what, this is my FAVORITE main course among the two that I tried (besides Steak Frites). This is also one of the all time favorite dish by Cassis Kitchen, they said people come back here again for this menu. And I have to agree with that. Wild mushroom, gnoochi, sliced asparagus, and Chimichurri. Chimichurri is the green paste above the duck which is made of finely-chopped parsley, minced garlic, vegetable oil, oregano, and white vinegar. Despite the fragrant and strong flavored paste, the duck itself was totally the spotlight. Very tender and juicy texture, and in fact it has a similar texture with medium cooked meat. I recommend you to try this when you visit here.
STEAK FRITES - IDR 350.000
This is certainly *for most people* the most wanted dish in a fine casual restaurant. USDA Prime Sirloin 240 gram cooked medium with Maitre'd Butter, watercress salad and hand cut fries. I guess the price says it all, a very tender and juicy meat, pinkish middle. They actually suggested a medium rare cooked to give you a more tender texture. They put very little seasonings probably in order for us to taste the pure natural flavor of the meat. But somehow I prefer a little bit more of some herbs and salt. Salad and Fries were very fine.
CABERNET SAUVIGNON - RED WINE
Napa Angel by Montes Cabernet Sauvignon 2007, the suggested Red Wine to pair with the Steak Frites above. It was really warm, a little sweet and bitter. As a non expert in Winery, I wasn't quite understand about pairing of food with wine. But, I certainly in love with the smell of the strong red wine and the warm after taste on the throat.
ANGEL HAIR MENTAIKO - IDR 185.000
Hopefully, this is a great dish just as good as it looks. Didn't try it but a recommendation for pasta menu. Angel hair pasta, blue prawn, spicy mentaiko, garlic and basil puree.
WHOLE FISH BARAMUNDI
Didn't try this but it was part of our food tasting actually.
BANANA CHOCO SPHERE - IDR 108.000
For those of you who love sweet dessert, this is a recommendation as a few of us (bloggers) loved it during our food testing event. But, for me personally I'm not quite sure about the overall combination. The thin hard chocolate ball and salted caramel sauce had both given a sweet touch to the dessert, but the additional crumble and the brown sugary texture ingredient on the bottom gave it additional sweetener which made it very sweet for my liking. Not mentioning the banana and banana flavored ice cream inside the ball. But, its a matter of preference I guess. Anyway, the ball was perfectly and evenly melting from the top to the bottom.
0 CELCIUS - IDR 108.000
This is very unique as the outer ice was made in 24 hours, they said. Three scoops of lime sorbet with assorted fruits then poured with Processo - Italian sparkling wine. This is kinda soupy because the wine was flooding inside. So when you scoop it, you're gonna scoop the fruit, the sour sorbet and some wine together. Very refreshing!
NEW YORK CHEESE CAKE - IDR 118.000
This is not your ordinary Cheese Cake. Frankly said, I have never had a cheese cake this smooth like buttery texture in my mouth. It was so effortlessly melting in my mouth like its not a cheese cake, its butter! It came with some fresh strawberry compote (strawberry cooked with water, sugar and spices)
THE PRIVATE ROOM
THE KITCHEN
[SUMMARY] This is definitely an upscale casual dining in Central Jakarta. They set the standard of food and service very high as it was used to be one of the best French Fine Dining Restaurant in Jakarta. Price wise is still above the average of casual dining but Quality is not compromised. Very nice for a weekend hang out or special event.
